Zespri (English: Zespri International Limited) is the world's largest kiwifruit seller. It was established in New Zealand in 1997 and its headquarter is located in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. It has now licensed growers in Italy, France, Japan, South Korea, Greece and Australia, and is conducting trials in several other countries. To meet year-round consumer demand, Zespri sells kiwifruit from Italy from November to January.
How does the kiwi fruit turn from green to gold?
In the 1990s, Zespri began breeding a new variety of kiwifruit, developed through our natural breeding program and operated in partnership with New Zealand Plants and Foods. This new yellow-fleshed golden variety is less furry than the green variety and has a sweeter, more tropical flavor.
Kiwi growers are hard at work learning how to grow this new variety of golden kiwi. By the turn of the century, growers were exporting Zespri® Gold kiwifruit around the world. In 2010, kiwifruit growers were confronted with a bacterial vine disease, Pseudomonas syringae kiwifruit venereal disease (Psa). By July 2012, nearly half of New Zealand's kiwi orchards had been lost to Psa infection. Gold kiwifruit are particularly susceptible to Psa bacteria, with vines severely affected. But because Zespri™ has never ceased our commitment to innovation, we already have a new golden variety of kiwifruit in our natural breeding program that has been in development for over 10 years. When we promoted this new golden variety among Zespri growers, the vines thrived, proving its Psa tolerance. Even better, this new golden variety tastes amazing, with a more balanced sweet tropical taste than the original golden variety - plus smoother skin!

Due to seasonal restrictions on kiwi fruits, harvested kiwi fruits can only be kept for a maximum of 9 months. Taking Hong Kong as an example, most Zespri kiwi fruits produced in New Zealand are sold on the market from April to November every year. On the other days, consumers mainly eat Italian products.

Storage Method：Unripe fruits can be put together with apples to accelerate ripening; or placed at room temperature for about 5 days to ripen naturally. Fruits that are not to be eaten for the time being are best wrapped and stored in the refrigerator, but the storage time should not be too long.
Can kiwifruit be refrigerated?
Yes, you can refrigerate Zespri® kiwifruit. Ripe green kiwifruit lasts up to 5 days in the refrigerator and SunGold™ kiwifruit lasts up to 7 days in the refrigerator. Putting in the refrigerator will help slow down the ripening process, which will help prolong the shelf life of kiwifruit.
We always recommend that you ripen kiwifruit at room temperature. Ripe kiwis will stay delicious for days in your fruit bowl. But if you can't eat an entire bag of kiwifruit in one sitting, you can keep kiwifruit fresh for up to a week by refrigerating.
