Binomial Name:Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf

Chinese Name:香茅

Other Names:Lemongrass | Citronella

Product Description:Every part of lemongrass has a lemony aroma, but only the lower part of the stem is tender and edible. The used parts are mainly leaves, flowers, stems, roots, seeds and fruits. The older outer leaves can be used to flavor or make herbal tea. Lemongrass has the functions of disinfection and sterilization. Lemongrass can treat rheumatism, migraine, sore throat, fever, cough, enteritis, increase appetite, rheumatism, oily skin, soft skin and other pain symptoms. In addition, citronella can be used in patients with acne, less milk secretion, stimulating mood, reducing depression and anxiety, feeling cold and drinking cold in summer, headache and fever, aversion to cold without sweating, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, edema and beriberi.

Commonly cultivated in Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan and other places. In addition, it is also distributed in India and eastern Africa.

What we didn’t know about lemongrass is that certain varieties are used to make citronella for mosquito repellents!

Variety:Edible citronella is mainly the part of the leaf sheath with a little light green in the white at the bottom of the stem, which is the whole grass of the genus Lemongrass of the Poaceae family. There are two main varieties: (1) West Indian Lemongrass: Lemongrass generally refers to lemongrass.
(2) East Indian Fragrant Buds

Supply Season:Hong Kong is supplied throughout the year.

Storage Method:Excess lemongrass can be stored in the refrigerator. Lemongrass can be used as a dry spice if it becomes hard or discolored. Wrap in plastic bags and refrigerate for two to three weeks, or freezer for up to six months. Frozen lemongrass retains its original aroma. Air-dried will lose the flavor of lemongrass. There are also sold dried lemongrass and lemongrass puree after boiling and filtering, but both have lost the original flavor of lemongrass.

Pregnant women should be cautious about eating lemongrass, as lemongrass consumes energy and hurts yin. Although lemongrass can prevent heatstroke, it can also increase appetite. However, lemongrass has the disadvantage of consuming qi and impairing yin, so it should not be used for people with qi deficiency, yin deficiency, and hyperhidrosis. Pregnant women eating lemongrass will consume gas and hurt yin. Therefore, pregnant women with qi deficiency, hyperhidrosis and yin deficiency should eat lemongrass with caution. In addition, lemongrass is relatively irritating. Pregnant women eating food cooked with lemongrass will affect the uterus and fetus. For different pregnant women, the consequences will be different, and it may have unpredictable effects.

If women have painful or irregular menstrual cycles, they can drink lemongrass tea to stimulate menstrual blood flow. But if you're pregnant, the active ingredients in lemongrass tea could suddenly cause the membranes to rupture suddenly and trigger a miscarriage. Regular consumption of lemongrass tea during pregnancy can suddenly reduce your blood sugar levels. Women with gestational diabetes or hypoglycemia should not drink lemongrass tea as it can adversely lower blood sugar levels.

Cooking Skills:To use lemongrass, you must first remove the tough outer layers (anything that feels particularly tough and papery). You can also trim off the top several inches, which are also tough. Freeze any that you don’t use for later!

For example, when lemongrass is used in stews or curries, it will be seasoned with the whole root, and the outermost two layers of its stem should be removed first, and it should be smashed and put into the dish for seasoning. Remove it before serving. For example, when using lemongrass as an ingredient in soups or salads, the sprouts should not be cut into large pieces, otherwise there will be a lot of residue when chewing. The best taste is the part that is two to three centimeters closer to the root. The thinner part on the top is not suitable for raw food because it has many fibers and is hard. The green part of lemongrass is not eaten directly but is used as a spice in cooking. Suitable food types include beef, chicken, fish and shellfish, and pasta. Basil, chili, cinnamon, top chili, garlic, coconut milk and more.

Notes:When the citronella stalks are crushed, the citronella releases volatile essential oils, which intensify its flavor.

If women have painful or irregular menstrual cycles, they can drink lemongrass tea to stimulate menstrual blood flow. But if you're pregnant, the active ingredient in lemongrass tea could suddenly cause the membranes to rupture suddenly and trigger a miscarriage.

🔅 Remark:

🍎 Preserve fruits

1. Fruits especially with softer skin, if packaged, should be placed in the cold box in the original package;
2. Organic fruits are more prone to spoilage if they have water droplets. Put the fruits in a ventilated place to dry or wipe off the water vapor, then wrap the fruits in slightly damp newspaper and put them in a plastic bag before refrigerating. ;
3. Organic fruits do not use preservatives or special treatments. fruits are generally stored for three to five days in room temperature only, should be kept in fridge. Some fruits e.g. papaya will decompose enzymes, so they should be eaten as soon as possible.

🍏 How to wash fruits

1. Wash fruits before eating to keep them fresh;
2. It is not advisable to soak the fruits for too long, and they should be washed first and then cut to avoid the loss of vitamins;
3. Washing fruits with dilute salt water or Dish Drop can easily remove vegetable insects;
4. Cut fruits with a stainless steel knife to reduce vitamin loss;
5. Vegetable leaves contain a lot of nutrients, so you should avoid shredding, chopping or grinding the leaves;
6. Immediately eat after cutting, to avoid the loss of vitamins due to air oxidation.
